Joss Stone claims she paid everything she had (estimated to be approximately $16 million) to get out of her contract with her record label EMI.

"It all went when I left EMI," Joss said in response to reports that she was worth $16 million. "I was flat even, down to nothing. I wasn't even down to a million in the bank. What I had left was my house and three flats in Exeter and that was it."

The U.K. soul singer adds that she is fine with how things worked out:

"Money is the thing that people hold over you but to me it was just cotton balls. Don't let it suffocate you. Don't let yourself need it that much."

As far as what she hopes to do now for money, Stone says, "I just thought, 'I'm free. I'll go out and play some gigs and earn my living.'"
