Twitter Takes A Stand Against Revenge Porn

Twitter, Inc. (TWTR) has taken stern steps to ban the posting of revenge porn and nonconsensual nude photos by users. The micro-blogging site has put in place new rules that prohibit the uploading of such photos, and warned that the accounts of such users will be locked.

Twitter have added rules to this effect through a series of updates to its privacy policy. The new twitter rule states, "You may not post intimate photos or videos that were taken or distributed without the subject's consent."

The move is designed to crackdown on abuse and harassment on the social media site. Twitter claims that it now reviews five times as many user reports as it did earlier, and has tripled the size of its support team focused on handling abuse reports.

According to Twitter, users will be asked to confirm that the photos or videos in question were posted without consent. Agents will review complaints to confirm that the content at issue violates our policy.

Photos or video that do not appear to violate the policy, such as content that an individual has previously indicated was made publicly available with permission, will not be actioned.

Meanwhile, the content that is identified as violating Twitter policy will be hidden from public view and users posting it will have their accounts locked. The users will then be required to delete the content in question before being able to return to the platform.

Users posting such content with an intent to harass will be subject to suspension from Twitter.

Twitter has 284 million registered users and is striving to expand its user base, which while impressive, still trails Facebook's 1.3 billion users. Addressing the problem of revenge porn and nonconsensual nude photos is a positive step for the network to retain and increase its users.

Last month Reddit also changed its privacy policies and notified users that it would begin the process of processing and taking down offending content from the site's more than 9,000 communities.
