The Commerce Department is scheduled to release its housing start report for August at 8:30 am ET Tuesday. Economists expect housing starts to come in at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.190 million units, while building permits are expected at 1.167 million units.
Ahead of the data, the greenback climbed against its major rivals.
The greenback was worth 1.1186 against the euro, 101.85 against the yen, 0.9785 against the franc and 1.2973 against the pound as of 8:25 am ET.

The Federal Reserve policy session was in focus as it was the first to be led by the new chief Kevin Warsh. In Europe, central banks of the U.K. and Switzerland announced their rate decisions. In Asia, the Bank of Japan drew attention for its policy moves, while data out of China threw some light on the state of the economy.
