A number of cryptocurrency luminaries dominate Fortune's New "Ledger 40 Under 40 List" - a supplementary honor roll of the most impressive, young superstars under the age of 40, who are transforming business at the leading edge of finance and technology.

Every year, Fortune prepares a list of "40 Under 40", ranking the most influential young people in business.

This year, for the first time ever, the New York-based business magazine introduced "The Ledger 40 Under 40 list." Compiled by Fortune's fintech team, it highlights the pioneers who built some of the world's fastest-growing businesses. Most of them are leaders in the fields of digital payments, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, and blockchains, or distributed accounting ledgers.

Brian Armstrong, the Co-founder and CEO of Coinbase, tops the list.

Armstrong is building Coinbase, the biggest U.S. Bitcoin exchange, into what his team hopes, will become "the Google of crypto," according to Fortune.

He is followed by Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin. Jihan Wu, who co-founded Bitmain, the world's biggest Bitcoin mining hardware manufacturer, comes third.

Other prominent cryptocurrency personalities who figure in the list include Amber Baldet, CEO and co-founder of Clovyr; Vlad Tenev and Baiju Bhatt, Co-founders and Co-CEOs of financial services company Robinhood; and Christine Moy, who is the blockchain guru for JPMorgan Chase.

The Winklevoss twins - Cameron and Tyler - who turned the proceeds from a legal settlement over the origins of Facebook into a billion-dollar Bitcoin investment, are placed at No. 8.

Some of these names also appear in the 2018 "40 Under 40" main list, Fortune's annual ranking of the most influential and inspiring young people in business under the age of 40.

Brian Armstrong is ranked 20 in the main list. The name of Vitalik Buterin can be seen two steps down, while Vlad Tenev and Baiju Bhatt are in 24th position.

Fortune will be hosting "Brainstorm Finance", a new conference based on the theme - the intersection of finance and technology - in Montauk, New York, next year.
