Israeli social trading platform eToro signed an advertising deal with seven of UK's Premier League football clubs, for which payment will be made in Bitcoin. The deal will also see eToro becoming an official club partner.
Newcastle United became one of the first Premier League clubs to launch the commercial partnership with eToro. The other six clubs who signed simultaneous deals with eToro are Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, Southampton, Brighton & Hove Albion, Cardiff City and Leicester City.
The deal will include access to matchday LED boards, player access, tickets and digital rights, which is expected to enable eToro to gain global exposure through a range of marketing opportunities.
The integration of blockchain and cryptocurrency has the potential to improve the process of making purchases by clubs and supporters. Football teams have previously embraced cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
Way back in June 2015, eToro had signed a three-year partnership deal with the West Ham United football club from the English Premier League.
eToro started its UK operations in 2013. It is regulated in Europe by Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission and regulated in the UK by the Financial Conduct Authority.
In late July, Gibraltar United Football Club claimed to be the world's first football team to introduce cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin as payment for players after it signed a sponsorship partnership with blockchain-based platform Quantocoin.
London-based Arsenal Football Club signed a sponsorship deal with CashBet, a cryptocurrency, in January.
Football superstars such as Roberto Carlos, Luis Figo, Michael Owen and Lionel Messi have formed partnerships with cryptocurrency projects.
Recently, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) launched a blockchain-based ticketing system, which will make the ticket sales process for matches more simple and safe.
After pioneering Bitcoin trading in 2013, eToro expanded its cryptocurrency offering in January 2017, facilitating trade in Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin, and other popular cryptocurrencies.
