A federal jury in Los Angeles has ordered that Katy Perry, her collaborators and her record label must pay $2.78 million in damages in a copyright lawsuit.

The jury found that the pop star's 2013 hit "Dark Horse" partly resembled the Christian rap song, "Joyful Noise."

As per the order, Perry must pay $550,000 to Marcus Gray and two others who co-wrote the song with him in 2009.

Perry's label, Capitol Records, will have to pay nearly $1.3 million.

Perry's five collaborators, including Max Martin and Dr. Luke, were also ordered to pay.

"Dark Horse" reigned on top of Billboard's Hot 100 chart for 4 weeks in 2014.

The verdict is a great victory for Gray, a lesser known musician once known as Flame, as it came after 5 years of legal battle against music industry heavyweights.
