John Mayer has revealed that the inspiration behind his song "Your Body Is a Wonderland" was a high school love and not his ex-girlfriend Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Speaking on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast on Tuesday, Mayer said, "That was about my first girlfriend. That was about the feeling, which I think was already sort of nostalgic… I was 21 when I wrote that song and I was nostalgic for being 16."
"Your Body Is a Wonderland," released in 2001 from the album Room For Squares, won him his first Grammy award for Best Pop Vocal Performance in 2002.
That led to years of speculation that the hit song was written for Jennifer Love Hewitt, whom Mayer dated the same year.
"No, that's one of those things where people just sort of formed that idea, it gets reinforced over the years, no, no, no. I had never met a celebrity when I wrote that song," he told the podcast host Alex Cooper.
The co-founder of Dead & Company is set to embark on Summer Tour 2023 with the band next May.
