After initially showing a lack of direction, stocks have moved mostly higher over the course of the trading day on Thursday. The major averages have all climbed into positive territory following the mixed performance seen in the previous session.
In recent trading, the major averages have reached new highs for the session. The Dow is up 122.09 points or 0.4 percent at 33,672.36, the Nasdaq is up 66.25 points or 0.5 percent at 13,159.10 and the S&P 500 is up 21.15 points or 0.5 percent at 4,295.66.

The Federal Reserve policy session was in focus as it was the first to be led by the new chief Kevin Warsh. In Europe, central banks of the U.K. and Switzerland announced their rate decisions. In Asia, the Bank of Japan drew attention for its policy moves, while data out of China threw some light on the state of the economy.
