Obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD, is a persistent condition characterized by uncontrollable, repetitive thoughts (obsessions) and the performance of ritualistic behaviours (compulsions). These habits take a lot of time and can really bother the person, making it hard to go about their daily life.
Medications like antidepressants, psychotherapy, or a combination of treatments are used to treat OCD. There are said to be over 3 million people in the U.S with OCD. Approximately 40% to 60% of OCD patients continue to experience significant residual symptoms despite approved therapies. Some refractory patients undergo psychosurgery (cingulotomy or deep brain stimulation) to alleviate their crippling symptoms.
