The company's earnings came in at $481.6 million, or $4.55 per share. This compares with $320.2 million, or $2.85 per share, in last year's second quarter.
Analysts on average had expected the company to earn $4.14 per share, according to figures compiled by Thomson Reuters. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.
The company's revenue for the quarter rose 12.7% to $2.83 billion from $2.51 billion last year.
