Obesity is a complex disease influenced by various factors including genetics, specific medications, inadequate sleep, the gut microbiome, stress, and the availability of affordable food, safe spaces for physical activity, and healthcare access, according to Ruth Petersen, director of CDC's Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity.

The prevalence of obesity in the U.S. among adults is 40.3% based on August 2021 - August 2023 data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The emergence of GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound, both for approved and off-label uses in the management of obesity, has heralded a new era in the treatment of obesity and pre-obesity.
