The company's earnings came in at $485.58 million, or $3.03 per share. This compares with $432.02 million, or $2.85 per share, last year.
Analysts on average had expected the company to earn $2.88 per share. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.
The company's revenue for the period rose 18.4% to $1.950 billion from $1.647 billion last year.
