After failing to sustain an initial move to the upside, stocks have given back ground over the course of the trading session on Friday. The major averages have pulled back off their highs of the session and have recently been lingering near the unchanged line.
Currently, the major averages are posting modest losses. The Dow is down 146.73 points or 0.3 percent at 44,337.76, the Nasdaq is down 18.34 points or 0.1 percent at 20,867.31 and the S&P 500 is down 2.04 points or less than a tenth of a percent at 6,295.32.

The Federal Reserve policy session was in focus as it was the first to be led by the new chief Kevin Warsh. In Europe, central banks of the U.K. and Switzerland announced their rate decisions. In Asia, the Bank of Japan drew attention for its policy moves, while data out of China threw some light on the state of the economy.
