British energy and services company Centrica Plc (CNA.L) on Tuesday said that it has approved further life extensions for two of its UK nuclear power stations, in which it has a 20 percent stake.

The company said that the Heysham 1 and Hartlepool plants will now operate until March 2028, which is a year beyond earlier expectations, while Heysham 2 and Torness are on schedule to close in the summer of 2030.

According to Centrica, these stations provide low-carbon electricity for over 4 million homes annually, thus supporting the UK's clean energy ambitions. Since December 2024, the announced extensions are expected to add around 12 TWh of electricity generation between 2026 and 2030, including 3 TWh from the September 2 update.

The move comes in the heels of Centrica's 1.3 billion pounds investment in a 15 percent stake in Sizewell C, a 3.2GW nuclear plant, which is under construction in Suffolk. Once operational, the Sizewell C plant is expected to supply zero-carbon baseload power for at least 60 years.
