Danish biotechnology company Novonesis A/S (NSIS_B.CO) said on Monday that it has entered into a research partnership with pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk B A/S (NVO,NOVOB.CO,NOV.DE) to look into the role of the gut microbiome in maintaining metabolic health.
The gut microbiome, which comprises of bacteria, fungi, and viruses in the human gut, has become a key focus in health science due to its growing link to various aspects of human well-being, the company added.
Novonesis said that the companies plan to develop and test symbiotic food supplements, which are combinations of probiotics and prebiotics, to support metabolic health indicators like blood glucose and cholesterol levels. Probiotics are live microorganisms, while prebiotics serve as their nutrient source, the company added
According to Novonesis, the collaboration will also look into how the gut microbiome can be used to monitor and predict individual health trajectories, and look into novel biomarkers to assess the effectiveness of microbiome-based solutions.
