Fortescue Limited (FMG.AX) has achieved a major milestone in its decarbonization journey with the delivery of its first large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at North Star Junction in the Pilbara. The installation marks the beginning of a broader rollout of multi-gigawatt-hour storage systems that will be essential to transitioning Fortescue's energy supply to renewables in the years ahead.

The NSJ BESS, powered by BYD's advanced Blade Battery technology, will store renewable energy generated during the day and supply green electricity to the Pilbara Energy Connect (PEC) network at night. Comprising dozens of energy storage containers, the system is designed to provide critical grid stability and represents a significant step toward replacing fossil fuel generation with renewable power.

BYD's Blade Batteries are engineered for high safety, reliability, and performance, incorporating liquid cooling systems that ensure efficient operation in the demanding Pilbara climate.

Fortescue's next installation is planned for Eliwana, where a new BESS is scheduled for delivery and commissioning in early 2026. In parallel, the Company is advancing construction of its Cloudbreak Solar Farm, which is nearing the halfway mark, and has already completed hundreds of kilometres of transmission lines as part of the PEC project.
