NEXTDC Ltd. (NXT), an Australian data centre operator, on Friday confirmed it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with OpenAI under the OpenAI for Countries program.
Under the national infrastructure partnership, NEXTDC and OpenAI will jointly plan, develop and operate a next-generation hyperscale AI campus and large-scale GPU supercluster at NEXTDC's S7 site in Eastern Creek, Sydney. The companies said the campus will provide secure, sovereign digital infrastructure to support sensitive and mission-critical workloads across enterprise, financial services, government, defence, education, healthcare, research and the broader technology sector.
The first phase of the project will focus on NEXTDC's S7 hyperscale campus, which the company said will become one of the most advanced sovereign AI facilities in the Asia-Pacific region. The site is being engineered to meet Australia's SOCI security and operational standards, and will feature next-generation technologies such as closed-loop high-density liquid cooling for ultra-high-density GPU clusters—systems that do not require ongoing potable water for cooling operations.
NEXTDC said these engineering decisions will position S7 at the forefront of sustainable, sovereign digital infrastructure in the region and ensure readiness for future liquid-cooled, high-density AI architectures.
The first phase of the S7 development is expected to be delivered in the second half of 2027.
