Thousands of cases of salad dressing used in food service have been pulled back after plastic material was found in certain products, the FDA said.
The recall covers dressings made by California-based Ventura Foods and distributed nationwide. Ventura initiated the recall on November 6, which the FDA later classified as a Class II action on December 4, meaning the products could cause temporary or medically reversible health effects.
More than 3,500 cases are affected, including food-service varieties tied to the Hidden Valley Ranch brand. The FDA said black plastic planting material was discovered in granulated onion supplied for use in the dressings.
Products included in the recall range from Italian and Caesar dressings to Creamy Poblano Avocado Ranch and Hidden Valley Buttermilk Ranch. All were sold in one-gallon or deli-size containers. Consumer-size bottles sold in grocery stores are not impacted.
According to the FDA, the affected products were shipped to seven retailers operating across 42 locations in multiple states, from Texas and Florida to Illinois and Washington. One shipment also went to a customer in Costa Rica.
Hidden Valley said no retail products sold to shoppers were involved. A spokesperson said the recalled item was a one-gallon food-service product that was never distributed to consumers and was manufactured by Ventura Foods as a third-party partner.
The FDA advised customers not to use the recalled dressings and to return them for a refund. The agency also warned that some of the products may already have been used in deli or ready-to-eat meals, even if those foods were not produced by Ventura Foods.
