Our eyes are not just windows to the soul - they can also provide clues about our overall health. For instance, a routine eye scan may even help predict the risk of stroke. At the same time, the eyes are susceptible to hundreds of different diseases. According to the World Health Organization, more than 2.2 billion people worldwide experience some form of vision impairment or blindness. Aging is a significant risk factor for eye disorders, and one such condition is macular degeneration. Also called age-related macular degeneration (AMD), it is a progressive eye disease for which there is currently no cure, and it exists in two forms: wet and dry.

The company we are profiling today is Ocular Therapeutix Inc. (OCUL), which is developing a treatment for wet AMD.
