Most people associate melanoma with skin cancer, but this malignancy is not confined to the skin alone. It can also develop in the eyes, nasal cavity, oral cavity, and even the throat - essentially, wherever melanocytes, the specialized pigment-producing cells, are present.
Melanoma that develops in the eye is known as ocular melanoma. Depending on the site of its origin, ocular melanoma is classified as either uveal melanoma - the most common type - or conjunctival melanoma, which is less common.
