Basilea Pharmaceutica Ltd (0QNA.L) on Thursday said the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, awarded the company $13.3 million to advance development of its novel antibiotic ceftibuten-ledaborbactam etzadroxil for the treatment of complicated urinary tract infections, including pyelonephritis.
Following the latest tranche, BARDA has committed a total of $25 million to the program. The contract could provide up to an additional $133 million in non-dilutive funding.
The drug candidate has received Qualified Infectious Disease Product and Fast Track designations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infections.
Basilea Chief Executive Officer David Veitch said the funding will support further development of the antibiotic candidate, including preparations for a Phase 3 program.
