Basilea Pharmaceutica AG (BSLNZ.XC), a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company, announced on Thursday that it has been awarded $13.3 million by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to further develop its oral antibiotic, ceftibuten-ledaborbactam etzadroxil, for treating complicated urinary tract infections or cUTI, including pyelonephritis.

Complicated urinary tract infections, including pyelonephritis, are the most common bacterial infections ascending from the bladder.

There are currently no approved oral beta-lactam or beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations available against certain Enterobacterales species.

Ceftibuten-ledaborbactam etzadroxil is a novel oral antibiotic, a beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor (BL/BLI) combination.

Notably, after the current tranche of $13.3 million, BARDA has committed a total of $25 million, and the contract may further provide up to $133 million in additional non-dilutive funding.

"This funding helps us to further advance this novel antibiotic, including the preparation of the clinical phase 3 program," said David Veitch, Chief Executive Officer of Basilea.

BSLNZ.XC is trading at 52.30 Swiss Francs, down 2.79%% on the Swiss Stock Exchange.
