Harmonic Inc. (HLIT) announced that Portugal Telecom SGPS SA (PT) has deployed a broad range of Harmonic's IP-based MPEG-4 AVC compression and stream processing solutions for its nationwide launch of satellite direct-to-home, or DTH television.
The company noted that the new service is offered as part of Portugal Telecom's triple-play Meo package and complements its IPTV offering, also powered by Harmonic. With this launch, Portugal Telecom is one of the first telecom companies in Europe to offer a MPEG-4 DTH service.
