A bus traveling along a major highway in Malaysia's southern state of Johor, lost control and hit a tree, leaving 9 passengers dead and 19 others injured, early Sunday. The bus was en route to neighboring Singapore when the accident occurred.

The bus smashed into a tree before overturning into a ditch, a police spokesperson said. The injured persons were taken to a nearby hospital, the police were quoted as saying.

Initial investigations were reportedly on, but the cause of the accident was not immediately known. The bus was carrying about 26 passengers excluding the driver and his assistant, when the accident occurred. Witnesses said that the assistant driver was at the wheel at the time of the accident.

Malaysia has a well-maintained toll highway system with speed limits of up to 110 km per hour. But many drivers allegedly do not follow safety procedures.
