1985 - Ricky Nelson Dies
1985 - Ricky Nelson Dies

Singer and television star Ricky Nelson died in a plane crash in De Kalb, Texas on December 31, 1985. Nelson and his band were on a tour in the Southeast and he had chartered a private plane dating back to the 1940s.

The plane had previously been owned by Jerry Lee Lewis and had significant technical problems. According to several witnesses, the plane had burst into flames before the pilots performed a forced landing in a wooded area. Seven people including Nelson, his wife and several band members were killed in the fire that ensued.

Nelson’s remains were temporarily misplaced in transit to his burial service in California. Nelson’s first wife Kris showed up uninvited to Ricky’s funeral, spawning an argument with their daughter Tracy. Angry that she had been left from Ricky’s will, Kris attacked Tracy, throwing her to the ground at the funeral.
