AC/DC held what is considered their first official concert at a pub in Sydney, Australia called Chequers on December 31, 1973. The group had previously appeared for short sets at the pub as a fill-in act but was booked as the headliner for a week of shows starting on New Year’s Eve 1973.

Chequers had been a music hot spot in Sydney in the 1960s, playing host to the likes of Frank Sinatra. It was a significant gig for any band in Sydney at the time and Angus Young admits they were jittery before the first date:

“I suppose we were a bit nervous. But we figured we were on good territory `cause, well, it’s New Year’s Eve and as the night wears on the bulk of the place is going to be drunk . . .” he recalls in “AC/DC: Maximum Rock & Roll” by Murray Engleheart.
