1961 - Beach Boys Play First Gig Under That Name
1961 - Beach Boys Play First Gig Under That Name

An upstart vocal group previously known as the Pendletons took the stage under their new name, the Beach Boys, for the first time on New Year’s Eve 1961. Their first paying appearance would take place at the Ritchie Valens Memorial Dance in Long Beach, California. The show was headlined by Ike & Tina Turner.

The group’s iconic track “Surfin’” was a rising hit single and the Wilson brothers’ father Murry secured them the date. They earned $50 apiece for their performance, which Brian Wilson later recalled as "five clean-cut, unworldly white boys from a conservative white suburb, in an auditorium full of black kids."

“Surfin’” soon gained airplay on the two most influential radio stations in Los Angeles and rose to number 75 on the national airplay charts. Al Jardine temporarily left the group the following February to continue his college studies. He rejoined the band in 1963 at Brian Wilson’s request.
