Gregory Abbott hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his single “Shake You Down” on January 17, 1987. The song served as the title track from Abbott’s debut release, which also includes his R&B chart hit “I Got the Feelin’.”When “Shake You Down” hit the top of the chart, it grabbed the top spot from "Walk Like an Egyptian" by the Bangles. The song held on at number one through January 24 when "At This Moment" by Billy Vera & the Beaters ascended to number one. While speaking with Billboard, Abbott explained how he developed the lyric: “The song was my attempt to express how men feel when they see a woman they like. Emotionally, the phrase ‘shake you down’ made sense and when I repeated it to a lady friend of mine she definitely understood what I was saying.”
