Elton John’s sixth studio release “Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player” was released on January 25, 1973. The album includes several of Elton’s best loved tracks including “Daniel” and “Crocodile Rock.”

The album held the number one position on the Billboard 200 chart between March 3 and March 16, 1973. It claimed the top position on the chart from “The World Is a Ghetto” by War and was eventually succeeded by Eric Weissberg’s “Dueling Banjos.”

“Crocodile Rock” was Elton John’s first number one single and while speaking with Rolling Stone he explained how it came about: “I always wanted to write one song, a nostalgia song, a rock and roll song which captured the right sound. ‘Crocodile Rock’ is just the combination of so many songs really.”
