Singer Karen Carpenter, one half of the brother-and-sister duo the Carpenters, died on February 4, 1983. She was 32.Carpenter had suffered with anorexia most of her adult life. While not a well-known eating disorder at the time, the singer was in treatment for it toward the end of her life. However, she had done too much damage to her body and died of heart failure.Carpenter, who was also an accomplished drummer, put out the first album with her brother in 1969. They first reached number one on the singles chart with "(They Long to Be) Close to You" in 1970 and topped the charts again with "Top of the World" and "Please Mr. Postman."
