Andre Romelle Young, known to the world as producer and rapper Dr. Dre, was born on February 18, 1965.

Dre grew up in Southern California, the son of an amateur musician. He became a DJ during his teen years and by the mid-1980s, he was part of the group World Class Wreckin' Cru.

They would score some local success, but within a couple of years he had teamed with Ice Cube and Eazy-E to form N.W.A. The group would revolutionize hip-hop, epitomizing the West Coast gangsta rap style with their 1988 disc "Straight Outta Compton."

Dre went solo in the early 1990s with his classic album "The Chronic," which featured a young Snoop Dogg on tracks like "Nuthin' but a "G" Thang." He has also made his mark as a producer, most famously as the mentor of Eminem.
