1977 - Peter Gabriel's Debut Solo Album Released
1977 - Peter Gabriel's Debut Solo Album Released

Peter Gabriel released his debut solo album on February 25, 1977.

The first of four self-titled studio efforts from the singer, the debut is often referred to as "Car" due to the picture on the cover.

Gabriel had spent the previous decade as lead singer for the band Genesis. Tensions had been growing between Gabriel and the rest of the band during the mid-1970s. His last album with them was 1974's concept LP "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway."

The debut LP included the track "Solsbury Hill," which marked his first single as a solo artist. Written about his departure from "Genesis," the song would go on to become one of his most recognizable tunes.
