Buddy Holly recorded his rock classic “That’ll Be the Day” at Norman Petty Recording Studio in Clovis, New Mexico on February 25, 1957. The track was released as a single off the debut album “The Chirping Crickets” from Holly’s band, the Crickets.

The version of “That’ll Be the Day” recorded by the group in Clovis was actually their second crack at the tune. They had previously recorded a version of the song for Decca records during a session in Nashville in 1956. The recording lacked the energy found in the second version and Decca declined to release it.

Based in Lubbock, Texas at the time, Holly and the song’s co-writer Jerry Allison became aware of Petty’s studio after several tracks recorded at the facility broke onto the Billboard charts. Those tracks included Buddy Knox’s “Party Doll” and Jimmy Bowen’s “I’m Stickin’ With You.”
