Depeche Mode hit the top of the Billboard 200 chart with their eighth studio release “Songs of Faith and Devotion” on April 10, 1993. The album followed their 1993 release “Violators” and includes the band’s highest-charting worldwide single, “I Feel You.”When the album hit number one, it claimed the top spot from Whitney Houston’s soundtrack for “The Bodyguard.” Depeche Mode held on at number one for one week before Houston claimed the top spot back. The album marked a new direction for Depeche Mode, who adopted a more rock oriented sound moving into the 1990s. In “Depeche Mode: Some Great Reward” by Dave Thompson, vocalist Dave Gahan recalled hearing the track “Condemnation” for the first time, saying: “It was a total relief, I couldn’t believe it!”
