2000 – ‘Real Slim Shady’ Released As Single

Eminem hit an early career high with his single “The Real Slim Shady,” which was released on May 16, 2000. The track was released as the first single off the Detroit MC’s “The Marshall Mathers LP.”

“The Real Slim Shady” brought Em his first number one hit in the U.K. and also peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. At the time, the rapper joined a diverse mix of tracks atop the Hot 100 including Vertical Horizon’s “Everything You Want” at number three, Aaliyah’s “Try Again” at number two and Enrique Iglesias’ “Be With You” at number one.

At the time of the release, Eminem was still riding high on the success of his breakthrough album “The Slim Shady LP.” While speaking with Spin magazine in August 2000, he explained the aggressive lyrical style that informed his early singles.

“If it’s on your mind, say it. If you’re sick enough to think it, then you’re sick enough to say it. I don’t think there’s a limit to what I would say — especially if it rhymes good.”
