U2 scored their first number one single in the U.S. with their track “With Or Without You” on May 16, 1987. The song was released as the third single from their smash hit 1987 album “The Joshua Tree” and originally went to radio in late March.

When “With Or Without You” hit number one, it succeeded Cutting Crew’s hit track "(I Just) Died in Your Arms.” U2’s single stayed on top of the charts for three weeks before Kim Wilde took over the top spot with “Keep Me Hangin’ On.”

According to David Kootnikoff’s “U2: A Musical Biography,” Bono penned the lyric for the hit as a meditation on his newfound fame and the responsibility to his wife. The frontman developed the chords and the track fell into place when he heard The Edge experimenting with a new guitar processor that added the missing ingredient.
