U2 Reach Number One With 'With Or Without You' 25 Years Ago

1970 - Crosby Stills Nash & Young Hit #1 With 'Deja Vu'
1970 - Crosby Stills Nash & Young Hit #1 With 'Deja Vu'

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young hit the top of the Billboard 200 chart with their debut album “Déjà Vu” on May 16, 1970. The album includes the classic CSNY tracks “Teach Your Children,” “Woodstock,” “Helpless,” and “Our House.”

When the album hit number one, it claimed the top spot from “Bridge over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel. The super group held on at number one through May 22 when it was succeeded by “McCartney” by Paul McCartney.

“Teach Your Children” peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and Graham Nash explained the track’s inspiration in the liner notes for their 1991 box set:

"The idea is that you write something so personal that every single person on the planet can relate to it. Once it's there on vinyl it unfolds, outwards, so that it applies to almost any situation. 'Teach' started out as a slightly funky English Folk song but Stephen (Stills) put a country beat to it and turned it into a hit record."
