Paula Abdul hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her single “Forever Your Girl” on May 20, 1989. The track served as the title song from her debut album, and followed her breakout single “Straight Up.”

When the track hit number one, Paula bumped "I'll Be There for You" by Bon Jovi from the top spot. She held on at the top for one week before "Rock On" by Michael Damian moved into the number one spot.

The track was penned by Oliver Lieber, who explained its origin, saying:

"That was a three-chord idea that came about by trying to show one of my five roommates what a sequencer was. It was very new back in '84-5, and I was showing him how you could record into the computer. So these three chords came out, and that became the basis of a track,” he said, according to songfacts.com.
