Elvis Costello gave his first live performance at the Nashville Rooms in London on May 27, 1977. At the time, Costello had already inked his first record deal with Stiff Records and recorded what would be his debut release, “My Aim Is True.”He was joined on the recording and at the first show by the American band Clover, who would later become Huey Lewis and the News. For the first show, Costello served as the support act for a group called the Rumour. He played a lean four-song set including “(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes,” “Waiting for the World to End,” “Mystery Dance,” and “I’m Not Angry.” The early show, coupled with Costello’s first single, “Less Than Zero,” helped him build an early buzz, and Clover was forced to break off due to contractual obligations. In June, Costello played first live show with the Attractions.
