Paul McCartney and Wings released their fourth studio album “Venus and Mars” on May 27, 1975. The album followed their 1973 effort “Band on the Run” and includes the title track along with “Rock Show.”The album hit the top of the Billboard 200 chart on July 19, 1975, bumping “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy” by Elton John from number one. They held on through July 25 of that year when “One of These Nights” by the Eagles hit number one. Speaking with Melody Maker in 1975, Paul explained how the title track came to be:"It's really a total fluke. I was just sitting down and started singing ANYTHING and some words came out. And I got this whole idea...I got this idea about a fellow sitting in a cathedral waiting for this transport from space that was going to pick him up and take him on a trip.”
