MC Hammer hit the top of the Billboard 200 chart with his third studio release “Please Hammer Don’t Hurt 'Em” on June 9, 1990. The album followed his 1988 release “Let’s Get It Started” and features his signature track “U Can’t Touch This.”When the album hit number one, it claimed the top spot from “I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got” by Sinéad O'Connor. The album held on for three weeks before turning the top spot over to the New Kids on the Block’s “Step By Step” for one week. He reclaimed the top spot the following week. “U Can’t Touch This” topped the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart in 1990 and sampled Rick James’ signature hit track “Superfreak.” James sued Hammer for using the track without permission and was eventually awarded a co-writing credit on the track.
