Muse frontman Matt Bellamy was born in Cambridge, England, on June 9, 1978. The rocker’s father, George Bellamy, had been a member of the 1960s rock band the Tornados. They were the first British group to ever score a number one hit in the U.S. Bellamy’s mother and father split in the mid-1980s, at which time he lived with his grandmother, who encouraged his musical talent. Bellamy’s journey with Muse began in 1994 when he met band members Chris Wostenholme and Dominic Howard at Teignmouth Community College in Devon, England.The band has gone on to become one of the biggest in the modern alternative scene, with hits like “Uprising” and “Starlight.”While speaking with CMJ in 2002, Bellamy explained part of his innovative musical style:“I’m interested in extreme sounds and if it’s possible to mix real hard-edged rock with something that’s complete opposite like classical piano,” he said.
