The Beatles hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “The Long and Winding Road” on June 13, 1970. The track was released as part of their album “Let It Be” and was released with the B-side “For You Blue.”

When the track hit number one, it claimed the top spot from "Everything is Beautiful" by Ray Stevens. The Fab Four held on in the top spot for two weeks with the track before "The Love You Save" by the Jackson 5 hit number one.

In “1000 UK #1’s,” former Apple Records manager Alistair Taylor recalls seeing Paul McCartney write the track, saying:

"He was picking out a melody and I said 'I like that, it's a fabulous melody,' and he said, 'It's just an idea.' He told the engineer to switch on the tape and he recorded 'The Long And Winding Road' then and there: it was full of la-las as he'd only written a few lines, but it was quite fantastic."
