Jethro Tull began recording their debut album “This Was” at Sound Techniques in the Chelsea area of London on June 13, 1968. The album contains various early Tull favorites, including "Beggar's Farm" and "Serenade to a Cuckoo,” which are featured in the famed documentary about the Woodstock Festival. The band released two singles from the album — “A Song for Jeffrey” and “Tribute to John Gee.” The latter was written for the man who managed London’s Marquee Club and offered them a venue for some of their early shows. “In Jethro Tull: A History of the Band, 1968-2001” by Scott Allen Nolle, Gee recalls his early attraction to the band:“It was a very jazz-oriented group, which I liked. We put them in here on Friday evenings and they built up a tremendous following.”
