Gordon Lightfoot hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his signature hit song “Sundown” on June 29, 1974. The single served as the title track from Gordon’s 1974 release and featured the B-side “Too Late for Prayin'.”When the track hit number one, it claimed the top spot from “Billy Don't Be a Hero” by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods. The track held on for one week in the top spot before “Rock the Boat” by Hues Corporation hit number one. Lightfoot spoke about the song with Crawdaddy magazine in 1974, saying:“All it is, is a thought about a situation where someone is wondering what his live one is doing at the moment. He doesn't quite know where she is. He's not ready to give up on her, either, and that's about all I got to say about that.”
