Singer-songwriter Tim Buckley died of a heroin overdose at the age of 28 at his home in Santa Monica, California, on June 29, 1975. Buckley had recently completed his most successful tour to date and snorted a large quantity of the drug after a long weekend of binge drinking with his friends and bandmates. Buckley had struggled with heroin use in the years prior to his death, but had managed to control his addiction while on tour. Hours before his death, Buckley’s wife Judy sat with the singer as he laid unconscious in bed. She discovered that he was dead hours later. In “Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley,” Tim’s bandmate Carter Collins explains that Judy didn’t think much of his passed out state. “Judy said she was used to seeing him like that. We all were. In those late days of Seconal and downers, Tim would just pass out,” Collins said.
