1957 - Buddy Holly's ‘Peggy Sue’ Recorded

Buddy Holly began work on his iconic hit track “Peggy Sue” on June 29, 1957. The track was recorded in a studio owned by producer Norman Petty in Clovis, New Mexico. It was written by Holly along with Petty and drummer Jerry Allison.

The song’s namesake was Allison’s girlfriend Peggy Sue Gerron, who had just broken up with the drummer temporarily. Holly had initially conceived of the track as a calypso number named “Cindy Lou,” after his niece. Petty engineered the track while Allison, who was also the drummer for the Crickets, provided the signature drum sounds.

The track was released as a single from Holly’s self-titled second album and featured the B-side “Everyday.” “Peggy Sue” rose to number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1957. It joined several of rock’s biggest tracks on the chart, including Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock” and the Everly Brothers’ “Wake Up Little Susie.”
