1953 - Men At Work's Colin Hay Born

Colin Hay, the songwriter best known as the voice behind Men At Work, was born in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, Scotland on June 29, 1953. Hay moved to Australia with his family at the age of 14 where he met his future bandmates Ron Strykert (guitar), Jerry Speiser (drums), John Rees (bassist) and Greg Ham (flautist/saxophonist).

Hay and Strykert formed the band in 1978 as an unnamed acoustic project and quickly developed their progressive pop/rock style. They signed with Columbia Records in 1981 and their first two singles, “Who Can It Be Now” and “Down Under,” were worldwide hits.

Hay spoke on the latter, explaining its often misunderstood lyric, saying:

"The chorus is really about the selling of Australia in many ways, the over-development of the country. It was a song about the loss of spirit in that country. It's really about the plundering of the country by greedy people. It is ultimately about celebrating the country, but not in a nationalistic way and not in a flag-waving sense. It's really more than that,” he said, according to songfacts.com.
