Bill Conti hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Gonna Fly Now (Theme From Rocky)” on July 2, 1977. The track was released on the “Rocky - Original Motion Picture Score” and was performed by DeEtta Little and Nelson Pigford. When the track hit number one on the chart, it claimed the top spot from "Got to Give It Up (Part 1)" by Marvin Gaye. Conti held on in the top spot for six weeks until "Undercover Angel" by Alan O'Day moved into the top position. The song famously appears in the film as Rocky Balboa, played Sylvester Stallone, undergoes his daily training routine and runs up the steps to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The lyrics were written by Conti’s collaborators Carol Conners and Ayn Robbins and the title allegedly came to Conners while she was in the shower.
