Led Zeppelin began recording their live album “The Song Remains the Same” on July 27, 1973. The album, which was recorded over the course of a three-night stand at New York’s Madison Square Garden, was created as the soundtrack for a live concert film of the same name.

The band originally imagined the film as a very straight-ahead concert documentary and said that it became exceedingly complicated due to the complex vision of director Joe Massot.

“[Finishing the film] was an incredible uphill struggle . . . The director was very stubborn and it would have been a lot easier had he just done what he’d been asked to do,” guitarist Jimmy Page recalls in the book “Icons of Rock.”

The album would not be released until September of 1976. The double disc, which would go on to top the U.K. albums chart and hit number two in the U.S., included renditions of such Zeppelin classics as “Rock And Roll,” “No Quarter” and “Stairway To Heaven.” It also features a 26-minute version of “Dazed And Confused” that took up the entire side of a record.
